Glamour Shot Techniques

Glamour Shot Techniquesthumbnail A photographer can use various techniques for taking glamour shots. Whether you're a professional photographer or an enthusiastic novice, taking good glamour photos is an important skill. Glamour shots are required in a range of different types of photography, including wedding photography and advertising. There are a variety of techniques you can use to enhance your skills at taking glamour shots.

Glamour photographs are sexy, provocative photos, typically of women. Glamour photography was popularized by the so-called pin-up girls of the 1940s, and is often associated with nude photography. Although some nude photography can be considered glamour photography, there is an important distinction. Glamour photography is meant to be suggestive and erotic, but not explicit. The aim of a glamour photograph is to conjure up an air of sophistication and sexiness without venturing into areas that some people find obscene. The iconic 1940s photo of swimsuit-clad actress Betty Grable is an example of a glamour photo, as is the famous 1970s-era poster of actress Farrah Fawcett.

Most glamour shots are vertical, not horizontal, and are taken with the photographer holding the camera on its side. Most photographers tend to associate horizontal shots with everyday family photos; by simply turning the camera on its side, you're immediately changing the viewer's perception of the photo. A vertical photo will reduce the unused space on the left and right sides of the model, which will help ensure the model remains the focus of the photo.

Try to fill the frame completely when composing your shot, as the focus of a glamour photo should be entirely on the model. A photo in which the model only takes up half the shot is rarely as effective as one in which the model fills the frame. This is not to say, however, that you shouldn't pay attention to the background -- improper background could ruin the entire photo. For example, a background color that clashes with the model's clothing — or is the same color as her clothing — will take away focus. One commonly used idea is to pose the model in a door frame or large archway, which serves to frame the model within the photograph.

Attaining the right light is also an important technique in glamour photography. Soft, atmospheric lighting can enhance the aura of mystery and sensuality, while lighting that's too harsh or shades the model's face can detract from the look you're trying to achieve. If you're using a digital camera, there are a variety of different light settings you can experiment with. Use different light settings on the same pose, and compare the results to determine which setting works best.
