Makeup Tips for Amateurs

Once you become used to applying makeup, you may not notice you're even wearing it. Wearing makeup can enhance the natural beauty of your face, but it can be hard to learn where to start. There are simple tricks to applying makeup that achieve the best results with minimal effort. Start out simple and then move to the more dramatic makeup effects so you’re well-versed in the essentials before you try something more complicated.

The most important part of applying foundation is finding the right color and consistency for your skin. People with oily skin should wear translucent foundation that won’t run much when oil builds up. Dry, pock-marked skin works best with a solid foundation that makes the face seem smoother. Spot test your skin to show how well the color blends into your skin. Once the spot dries, check it in the mirror to ensure it matches your skin in a natural way instead of making your face turn a different shade than your neck.
Too much eye makeup can leave you looking like a raccoon before you even leave the house. Primer is the important part of the application process. It preserves the color of the eye makeup and keeps oil from destroying the eye makeup effect. Apply conservative amounts of eyeliner to your lower water line (the part of your eye with the actual tear ducts). Draw along the lash line above and below your eyes with your eye liner. Shape your eyelashes with black eyeliner. Lightly apply a neutral-colored eye shadow to the top of your eyelid. Finish off the look by brushing eye shadow from the crease of your eye and all the way up to your eyebrow.
Fading is a big problem for many people who enjoy wearing lipstick. Choosing the right lipstick with all-night staying power is the first step to keeping it vibrant all night. Line your lips with lip liner before you apply the lipstick. Apply the lipstick to your bottom lip and rub the two together to spread it to your top lip. Lightly dab your lips with a tissue to remove the excess color. Brush over your lips with clear coat lip balm to protect the color through the night.
Through the day, your makeup can smudge, turning an otherwise classy makeup application into something macabre. Avoiding heavy physical activity and hot temperatures helps to keep sweat from smearing the makeup. High winds can also cause problems if they make your eyes water, so stay inside on windy days if possible. Getting used to your makeup is difficult for many people as well, so you have to fight to urge to rub and scratch your face until you get used to the added sensation of makeup. Carry your makeup with you to reapply it as necessary.
